The Technique That Changed Everything for Me (And My Small-Town Salon)

I need to be honest with you about something.

When I first started doing hair at 32 years old, I felt mediocre.

Not terrible. Not incompetent. Just... fine.

I could follow the techniques I'd learned at Aveda Institute. I could execute a solid haircut. My clients left happy enough. But deep down, I knew something was missing. My work didn't feel special. It didn't feel like mine.

And if I'm being really honest? That feeling of being "just okay" was eating away at my confidence every single day.

The Moment Everything Shifted

Then I discovered razor cutting, and I'm not exaggerating when I say it completely transformed my career.

Suddenly, I wasn't just following formulas or replicating techniques I'd seen in class. I was creating. I was problem-solving. I was giving each client something truly customized to their hair, their lifestyle, their frustrations.

That client who'd been complaining for years about her hair feeling heavy and flat? The razor gave me the ability to create softness, movement, and dimension she'd never experienced before.

The one whose beautiful curls always seemed to fall flat after a traditional scissor cut? Razor cutting brought her curl pattern to life in a way that made her tear up in my chair.

The busy mom who was so tired of spending 30 minutes styling her hair every morning? Now she could air dry and walk out the door looking polished and put-together.

What My Clients Started Telling Me

Here's what blew my mind: the feedback I started getting wasn't just about how their hair looked on day one.

Clients started coming back and telling me:

  • "I went six months before needing another haircut, and it still looked amazing the whole time"
  • "This is the first haircut that's ever grown out beautifully instead of getting awkward and bulky"
  • "I literally wash, scrunch, and go now - I can't believe how easy this is"
  • "You're the only person who's ever really listened to what I don't like about my hair and fixed it"

That last one especially hit me. Because razor cutting wasn't just giving me better technical results - it was making me a better, more intuitive stylist who could truly customize each cut.

The Business Impact I Didn't Expect

Now here's the part I really didn't see coming.

I live in Glendora - a relatively small town where most stylists use traditional shear cutting techniques. Nothing wrong with that at all, but it meant there was an opportunity.

When I became known as "the razor cutter," something shifted in my business.

Clients started seeking me out specifically for this technique. They'd call and say, "I heard you do razor cuts - I've been looking for someone who does that." They'd drive from other towns. They'd refer their friends.

I built a reputation. I stood out in my market. I got fully booked.

Razor cutting gave me a unique edge that attracted the exact clients I wanted to work with - people who valued customization, who wanted their hair to work with their lifestyle, who appreciated the artistry of what I was doing.

It Gave Me Something Even More Important: Confidence

Looking back, the technical skills were important, sure. But what really changed for me was the confidence.

I stopped feeling mediocre. I stopped second-guessing myself. I started trusting my instincts and my ability to create something beautiful and functional for each person in my chair.

That confidence translated into everything - how I talked to clients during consultations, how I priced my services, how I showed up on social media, how I presented myself as a professional.

Razor cutting didn't just make me a better cutter. It made me feel like a real artist.

If You're Feeling "Just Okay" About Your Cutting Skills...

I'm sharing this story because I know there are so many talented stylists out there who feel the same way I did back then.

You're good at what you do. Your clients are happy. But you know you're capable of more. You want to offer something special, something that makes you stand out, something that gives you that spark of excitement when you're behind the chair.

Maybe you've been curious about razor cutting but felt intimidated. Maybe you tried it once and it didn't go well, so you gave up. Maybe you just don't know where to start.

I created my Razor Cutting Essentials mini-course for stylists exactly like you - and exactly like the stylist I used to be.

It's everything I wish someone had taught me when I was starting out:

  • The fundamental techniques that make razor cutting feel natural and intuitive
  • How to troubleshoot common challenges (because yes, there's a learning curve, and I'll help you through it)
  • Real-world application for different hair types, textures, and client concerns
  • How to customize cuts for clients who have specific things they don't like about their hair
  • The business side: how to talk about razor cutting with clients and position yourself as a specialist

This isn't just technical training. It's about giving you a tool that can transform both your artistry and your business - just like it did for me.

You Don't Have to Feel Mediocre Forever

That feeling of being "just okay"? It doesn't have to be your story.

You have so much potential, so much creativity, so much talent waiting to come through. Sometimes you just need the right technique, the right training, the right moment to unlock it all.

For me, that was razor cutting. And I truly believe it could be that turning point for you too.

You've got this. I'm cheering you on.
